What Are Employability Skills?

Employability skills are the essential tools that help you get a job, keep a job, and grow on the job. They include everything from communication, teamwork, and problem-solving to digital literacy, professionalism, and adaptability (aka: the real-world skills employers look for every day).


Build Your Future with the Human Resource Development (HRD) Program

The Human Resource Development (HRD) Program helps adults strengthen the skills needed for today’s workplace and tomorrow’s opportunities. Whether you’re entering the job market, changing careers, or returning to school, HRD offers hands-on training and personalized support to help you succeed.


Courses in the Program Include:

💻 Technology Awareness – Build confidence using computers, email, and Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
🧭 Employability Lab & Workshops – Explore careers, create professional résumés, practice interviews, and sharpen your job search skills.
📊 WorkKeys Prep – Prepare for the ACT WorkKeys® assessments to earn your National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC).
🍎 Teacher Assistant Pathway – Begin your journey toward a rewarding career in education with foundational skills and career guidance.


Additional Information

The State Board of Community Colleges allows tuition and fees to be waived for students enrolling in courses listed as Human Resource Development (HRD) in the Master Course List, provided they meet at least one of the four eligibility criteria. To qualify for this waiver, students must complete and sign an application verifying that they meet one of the approved criteria. Students who do not meet these requirements are responsible for paying the applicable tuition and fees to register for the Continuing Education course.

Criteria:

  1. Are unemployed;
  2. Received notification of pending layoff;
  3. Working and eligible for the federal earned income tax credit (Table 1);
  4. Working and earning wages at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines (Table 2).
